I was sent this photograph earlier today from an ex AMS member, it shows Bernie Wood with his recently completed Darnell S class HMS Stoic.

Another, more detailed photo of the interior of Stoic's conning tower...I remember the swearing and cursing when Bernie was making all the tiny detail parts in that tower.

This was superb, cutting edge modelling back then...no etched brass, no real plans of the dive system...Bernie designed and made every piece and every fitting on that boat in his little workshop.

Another photo I came across of Bernie and his boats...

    (top to bottom:)

The conning tower of Bernie's HMS Stoic
    Bernie in typical pose
His Type V11c/41 with a much modified conning tower, originally built by Jim Ward.(I believe)

From my point of view,I have one question:
    - What's in the pictures "are man maid"?!,
because I am stunned about the BEAUTY and complexity.

Bernie was one of the best sub modellers of his time, Marius...he very rarely bought an item, much preferring to build anything he needed in his little workshop at the back of his house.

He wasn't an engineer by any means, but he could sit down with a pencil and a piece of paper, draw out what he needed, and then go and make it from almost any material.

He taught me and a lot of others so much, we all owe him a huge debt of thanks for what he did for us.

RIP Bernie Wood...a true sub guru.

If I know Bernie, he'd have had something radical on the go..that little workshop of his was an amazing place to enter. You couldn't move for stuff in there, you had to sort of shuffle into a free space (if you could find one) and then stand still. Anita (Bernie's wife) was scared to go in there, she would just bring the tea to the door and that was far as she'd go.

Thanks richard for sharing those pictures of bernies s class submarine a total work of art I wish I could build half as good I would be well happy .
The nice thing about the close up pictures is seeing the detail and I feel it gives great insperation to any one building one them selves.
And I wish I could work out how to do the main paint job amazing
    Take care geof
