IJN Type KD3 fleet submarine or similar Empty IJN Type KD3 fleet submarine or similar

Post  offroad Sat Oct 19, 2013 3:46 pm

    Hi,

i am looking for a plan or kit of an Type Kaidai 3 A or B, they are quite the same. Does anybody knows one who has build such a sub or a similar IJN one?

On YouTube you can see an original one.
Royal Indian Navy Sailors Sinking A Japanese Submarine During....

These subs are very impressive to me, but it seems there is very less info survived until today.

    Thanks for help,

    John from Germany

This is the link to the YouTube footage that John mentions...

as for plans, I've never seen any, but the man to ask is Gantu. If anyone can help you out, then he's the man to do it.

IJN Type KD3 fleet submarine or similar Empty Any IJN sub plans found?

Post  TXGR Thu Jul 20, 2017 9:05 pm

As this thread unceremoniously died about 4 years ago, I assume no IJN sub plans were found. Too bad, the Kaidai Type VIa would be a great subject.

For anyone interested, I did find plans for two IJN subs.

IJN I-400 series (aircraft carrying sub):
    http://drawingdatabase.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/1009754-i.jpg

I can't vouch for the accuracy, but the drawing includes cross-sections that are probably sufficient enough for the basis of a hull.

    IJN I-201 series:
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/I-201_class_general_arrangement_sections.svg

This is from Wikipedia, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this drawing either. There are only a few cross sections/bulkheads, so I am not sure this is adequate for making a hull mould or not.

In the books on IJN subs I've seen, there are no detailed drawings. I suspect, short of serious research in Japan, the best option is making an impression from a scale plastic model and scaling it up.

If anyone else has a source for IJN subs, I'd be very interested in learning more.

Upon further research, I came across some plans for a 1/48th scale IJN Junsen Type B submarine:
    http://www.rc-sub.com/files/projects/updates/24/4a8b56b8-d97d-d560-6001-4479a4b9be94.jpg

At that scale, the hull is 89 inches long!!

In fact, a builder at rc-sub.com put several years into it, before selling the kit. He had a web log page on his work up to the sale:
    http://www.rc-sub.com/projects/viewproject.php5?id=15

This build was based off of a kit from ScaleShipyard.com:
    http://scaleshipyard.com/Catalog%20Pages/submarines.html#SUB-29

At US$595, and then US$195 shipping (ground lower 48 states), the initial investment is significant, but the fiberglass project looks very nice.

IJN Type KD3 fleet submarine or similar Empty IJN sub plans KD7 I-178

Hello Brian and all the interested ones.
To get an overview about the IJN-subs, you can visit http://www.combinedfleet.com
The best drawing I`ve found, was a plan who shows about 27 cross sections ! Should be more than enough to built a KD7.
Additionally there is a total view from the side and the top but less info about details.
Try this webside for further information.

Some years ago the lindberg company sold a 1.4 m plastic model of an I-53. From time to time you find one in ebay. Lindberg made some mistakes ( wrong bow, manholes to big ) and so they stopped selling the sub. There was also a second sub, but they never sold it.
