      Just try it. You are not going to do any damage!

      The more hydrophones floating about the better (See my other post today!)

      Piezo elements are fairly "high impedance" but a lot of reasonably sensitive audio amplifiers will do the trick.

      The sort of sensitivity you are looking for (with the hydrophone element on a table) lightly tapping or scraping the table should give a noise over the headphones. (Headphones are always better, for some reason.)
